Daft Punk unravelled
Gallic robo-electro built from funk, soul and other bits and pieces left lying around the discotheque floor.

Idle Curiosity 2
So, despite repeated attempts to weed it out, my original Idle Curiosity playlist was becoming increasingly stuffed and was fast approaching Last.fm's 200-track limit for playlists. Bad times. So I decided to create a second playlist. Good times! As before, it's a mix of stuff gleaned from my travels around Last.fm, nosing into other people's charts: there's music I dimly remember and would like to re-visit, bands I've never heard of before, and tracks with titles stupid or bizarre enough to make me think "I've got to listen to that."

The Avalanches unravelled
Songs sampled on The Avalanches' 2001 debut Since I Left You and on their Gimix mix-tape from which the album developed. Bit difficult for this playlist to be anywhere near comprehensive, since the record is entirely composed of samples (estimates range from 600, to 900, to - gulp - 1,300 sources) but there's some corking tracks in here. Whenohwhenohwhen are they going to release their next album?

The Summer of '89
Kylie and Jason. Batman: the movie. Swirly-patterned hoodies. Them yo-yos that had Coca-Cola and Sprite logos on them. An unashamed nostalgia-fest from when I was twelve.

Funk Soul Sisters
Rollickin' hollerin' ball-bustin' sistahs who don't take no shit from their no-good mistahs. Hurrah!

Vitamin String Quartet: compare and contrast
The Vitamin Records label produces classical versions of rock and pop music. Some of the original songs covered are, frankly, appalling, yet the Vitamin String Quartet's versions are all aural aceness; how does that work, then? It is most perplexing, so I have compiled this playlist for the purposes of comparison.

3 Feet High And Rising unravelled
De La Soul's debut album 3 Feet High And Rising is a sampledelic slice of genius, bristling with invention and humour. I wish all hip hop sounded like this. Here are some of the tracks sampled.

Paul's Boutique unravelled
July 2009 is the 20th anniversary of the release of the Beastie Boys' second album Paul's Boutique. Two decades on and hip hop geeks are still furiously debating the provenance of all the samples that are crammed into the record. Here's some of the Beasties' source material, compiled using the Paul's Boutique Samples and References List (http://paulsboutique.info/) and the album's Wikipedia page.

It's a Family Affair
Siblings are annoying at the best of times, so quite why you would choose to spend six months crammed on a tour bus with them is anybody's guess. But here are some songs by bands that contain brothers and/or sisters. NB: Same Difference will NOT be appearing in this playlist.
