Servicio de Lavandería (Laundry Service) – is the fifth studio album by Colombian singer-songwriter Shakira and her first bilingual album (in English and Spanish). The English version of the album (Laundry Service) was initially released in November 2001 and then the Spanish version (Servicio de Lavanderia) was released in early 2002. This album made her known worldwide and established her as an international star, as well as making her one of the most important and famous Latin figures around the globe.
It was one of the best-selling albums of 2002 in the United States alone and also one of the best-selling albums of 2001 internationally within two months of its release. In the United States, 4,000,000 copies were sold, certified four times platinum, according to IFPI (excluding Latin America). It was also the seventh best-seller during 2002. Upon its release, Laundry Service received generally favorable reviews from music critics, although it was criticized by some Latin fans for seeming to abandon its people and rock roots in favor of popular contemporary music.
Six singles were released from the album. The first, "Whenever, Wherever" (and its Spanish version "Suerte"), was released on August 27, 2001 and peaked at number 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart. It also reached number one in several countries for the next six months, while on the Billboard Hot 100 chart it reached number 6. It was the best-selling single of 2002-2003 worldwide with over 10 million copies. The following, "Underneath Your Clothes", "Objection (Tango)" (and its Spanish version "Te Aviso Te Anuncio") and "The One", helped establish her as a leading artist worldwide. She also released two more exclusive singles for the Hispanic American community: "Te dejo Madrid" and "Que me quedes tú". Laundry Service won several awards around the world, including the Latin Grammy for Best Short Form Music Video for the song "Suerte (Whenever, Wherever)".
The album debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and was in the top ten in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Norway, New Zealand, Japan, Italy, Hungary, Greece, Germany, France, Finland, Denmark, Canada, Belgium, Austria and Australia. In twenty of these countries it went number 1 on the popularity charts. It also received four platinum discs in the United States for sales of four million, in Spain five platinum discs for sales of 500,000 copies, in Germany five gold discs for 750,000 copies, in France two platinum discs for sales of more than 600,000, in Canada and Australia five platinum discs for 500,000 and 350,000 copies, respectively, and in Mexico two platinum discs for 300,000 copies. It is the best-selling album in Shakira's discography, with more than 13 million units worldwide.
