It's been ten years since johnnynuxxx posted his comment and I still can't get over someone suggesting that all one needs from PG is a greatest hits collection and the album So. Peter Gabriel is one of the most consistent artists out there and his LPs are very carefully and thoughtfully constructed and laid out, so you're really doing both him and yourself a disservice by getting a best of and one (great) album. Anyway, this one is definitely one of his bolder and more experimental efforts, as several others have commented. It's also one of his best.

I'm sorry johnnynuxxx, but you are so badly mistaken. This is Gabriel at his peak of experimentation and creativity. The tribal qualities alone make this album one of the most influential for modern music today. I suggest giving it a few more listens.

Yep, favorite album and an absolute masterpiece. Comparisons with Phil Collins should have ended right here. Bought this today. And I'll always love the cover art.

might be his masterpiece from the 5 albums I've heard so far, even more than the first three albums, and even more than "So". It's that good.

Hasn't scrobbled properly for me, due to my copy not being called "Security" (the American title), but this is my favourite Peter Gabriel album. The album cover and the rest of the distorted, bizarre artwork (especially on the inner sleeve, what the fuck!?!?!?) used to scare me as a kid on my dad's vinyl copy, and songs like Rhythm and Family used to creep me out just as much. Nowadays this is one of my favourite albums...there's just something about it. Like shingouz said, there's a lot of wild and primal sounds (esp. with the drums) on this album, and all the *bizarre* (the keyword with this album) samples and electronic percussion are just fascinating to me. AFAIK this was one of the first fully digital albums, and one of the first records to make big use of the Fairlight CMI. If Peter ever won an award for an album, it should be this one. It's not massively accessible, but this is a pioneering obscurity that belongs in everyone's collection.

Probably the least accessible Gabriel album, but definitly a masterpiece. PG fascination with wild rhythms and strange sounds is at its peak, and every single song is an amazing trip into the unknown. Of course those who are looking for the commercial hits won't feel at home with this album.

After you finish slapping the monkey, there's really not much there. Skip this one, buy the GH (which has some of the better tracks from Security) and So, that's all you need. Anybody remember the video from STM on MTV? What a classic!
