"Wagon Wheel" is a song credited to American musicians Bob Dylan and Ketch Secor (of Old Crow Medicine Show). The chorus and melody come from a demo recorded by Dylan during the "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" sessions in February 1973 that, although never officially released, was in circulation as a bootleg usually named after the chorus and refrain, "Rock Me Mama". Secor added verses around Dylan's original chorus (and melody) 25 years after Dylan's demo recording. Secor and Dylan signed a co-writing agreement, and share copyright on the song; agreeing to a "50-50 split in authorship".
The song lyrics contain an interesting geographical misperception, when he sings "heading west from the Cumberland Gap to Johnson City, Tennessee." That would actually be an eastward drive. As Secor later explained “I just wanted the word ‘west’ in there. ‘West’ has got more power than ‘east.’ "
"Wagon Wheel" received a notable cover by Darius Rucker in 2013. Based on Spotify streams, it has now exceeded the original in popularity.
