Holy shit I never realized how obviously strung-out the Pups II version is lmao.

Notice how he starts out basically screaming and is practically breathless by the end of the song.

the version they did with Kurt was amazing. they improved it much better with him than when they redid the song for their other album.

Version from Too High to Die is pretty good as well. I think each version has it's own separate identity. None of them is superior to any of the others.

So influential and so underrated, under-appreciated and under-known (much like their fellow Arizonans, Giant Sand). It's a musical crime that some don't know that this is an MP original, not a Nirvana cover (along with Oh, Me and Plateau). 30 years later, this stuff is still totally original and beyond genre classification (no, "cowpunk" doesn't quite cut it).

Amazes me when he literally says it during the performance. Might have been one of the other two though, but still. If you like a song look it up.

When it comes to Lake of Fire, I'm torn between preferring the original or Nirvana's cover. But there is one thing which is certain: Cris and Curt's version is most excellent when slightly toasted in that strange period of time during the closing moments of a Saturday afternoon, when only a few shards of the dead day linger but the night has not yet begun.

The Meat Puppets are way underrated in my book. They put out some great albums when they were at their creative peak and, obviously, were a big influence on Kurt Cobain. In an interview, he cited them as one of the "punk" (or "punk influenced rock") bands with melodic songs that he listened to a lot ... along with The Vaselines and so forth.

I love both Meat Puppet versions of this song. This being the 1st so raw and dirty and perfect and then the re-recorded version as a hidden track on Backwater which is completely polished and vocally sung different. Both awesome versions of an awesome song
