It's a tongue-in-cheek, satirical song about people who use religion as a crutch on which to hang their problems (Me I'm still in trouble/sorry, sick and sad/me i'm still in trouble but that's all right 'cos i'm (glad to see you've got religion)). As a born-again Christian I think it's excellent!

Loudon Wainwright III (born 5 September 1946 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA) is an American songwriter, folk singer, humorist, and actor. He is the father of Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright , children of his marriage to the late Kate McGarrigle.
