I've always thought what Leonard Cohen meant when he said Ten New Songs was the "answer to The Future" was encapsulated by this song, which I think is literally about an epiphany, in which he was transported up to whatever Heaven there may be to meet whatever version of Divinity may or may not oversee the world. Certainly, after the experience of being compelled by other forces to write the The Future album, he didn't record again for many, many years and was by all accounts constantly drinking throughout (to escape from the Awful Truth?) though thank God he didn't pawn his diamond in the junkyard...

There is a form of love - mere charity - in which we do not love at all; in which we do not see or have in mind the other man to whom it is directed; in which we do not and will not notice his weal or woe; in which we merely imagine him as the object of the love which we have to exercise, and in this way master and use him. - Barth, K.

When I first heard him, this man didn't have me at "hello", he more likely had me when just having sung the "he" syllable. Bliss.
