This song has one of Martin Barre's best solos. Definitely better than Hotel California.

"Hotel California" influenced by this? of course it was but who cares, "We used to know" is better. [3]

even though I'm a sucker for 70s Tull, their late 60s songs are brilliant in a whole other way :)

"Hôtel Californie" influencée par ceci? Bien sûr que oui mais qui s'en soucie, "Jadis nous savions" est meilleure. [2]

Wonderful, a seminal track for me - I heard this and quite a lot else that really opened my ears to music beyond the top 20. Better than Hotel Cali? You bet!

I love that 'We Used to Know' remains an obscure album track. It would kill me to see it get the life sucked out of it. I mean that's what happened with Hotel California.[2] True that. Nevertheless, it is the chord progression that should be lauded. Another rock example of this is Zeppelin's 'Stairway' and how they were on tour with a group called Spirit who played a song called 'Taurus' that oddly sounds like the chord progression for the beginning half. So, is it's like squabeling over which blues man stole the 12 bar style from who. Akin to much of classical music, time will erode the differences between the versions and will edify the actual song.

Basically two different songs with the same chord progression. Did JT influence the Eagles - who knows? They toured together and it is possible. But both songs are great. Tull lovers will always prefer this one, Eagles fans will alway go for Hotel California. But they're both classics.

IAN ANDERSON: We hadn't played this song live since the Isle of Wight festival in 1970, but have started playing it again recently. When we were in the studio recording it, and I strummed up my acoustic guitar and Martin added his bit, it never occurred to me that what we were playing would eventually form the basis of 'Hotel California'. The melody is not anything like 'Hotel California', of course, but when you actually get to the chord sequence, the way in which the thing progresses harmonically, it is actually the verse of 'Hotel California'. The Eagles were opening up for Jethro Tull around that time. However, 'Hotel California' is a very, very popular song and 'We Used to Know' remains an obscure album track.

salagadam - you must be totally crazy!!!! eagles = mainsteam mediocrity and naked commercialism eagles were a preconceived rip -off of acts from the previous decade - eg. take the byrds, csny, neil young et al and turn it into a whole pile of shit and make millions and millions of dollars out of it tull= kickass originality - no one made music quite like tull
