This version is amazing. Cohen's original can't compare, Wainwright's isn't bad, but when I play it after this .. I have strange feeling that Rufus's dirty mouth should be banned from singing this song.

The live version of this song (Live at Sin-e) is far better than the studio version. This guy is probably the best artist of the 90s.

@annoxero do you even know 95% of my bands? I highly doubt it, judging from your terrible metalfag taste with Cathedral, Witchfinder General etc. Just because you don't like certain bands doesn't make the fans opinions of the bands mean nothing, thats just pure elitisim (not surprising at all considering your a metalfag).

annoxero wrote:
@WinterStorms: I doubt if any of Jeff's fans would care much about the opinion of someone who listens to MCR, Paramore and crap like that.

this is one of those songs that I think no matter who sings it, it sounds amazing. It is one of those timeless songs. Some have more emotion than others and that is where the goosebump factor comes in. When the artist taps into the raw words and emotion of the song...priceless. I don't think alex is super invested in the song, she has a lot of vocal ability, but this song is one those songs that is held closely to people's hearts and is going to receive some sort of backlash. Let it be what it is. An amazing song.

WinterStorms wrote:
So over-rated Cohen's is far superior and Wainwrights. Hell pretty much artist is better apart from Burkes version. Irritates me so much that he gets all the credit eventhough he covered it. PFFT! I think his death has a major influence on this songs popularity, other examples of a sudden rush of popularity from the artists death includes Kurt Cobain, Pantera etc.

Valuinda, the fact is that the x factor girls cover is not so much that it is bad (and you can get a bad version of any song, what planet do you even live on?), it's because the girl has a mediocre voice which is not suited to recording a song with so much raw emotion written into the notes. She has not released it because she has a passion for the song; she has been told to release it because she has a sellable face. its kind of disrespectful to the memory of jeff buckley (who, although he didn't write it, it is basically his song, he made it, look at whitney houston i will always love you, dolly parton wrote it, but its basically hers. even dolly parton said that!) and that's why people are so annoyed.

I think it's a shame when a track is repackaged over and over. I have yet to hear Leonard Cohen's version so i'm keeping my lips sealed on that. I think this version is raw, simple and emotive - simply a superb version, yet when I hear Alexandra's version it makes me weep simply because it is utter rubbish.

Just done some more looking into this. Didn't know it had been covered by so many people. However, I think that all debate into the worst can be answered by watching Bono's version on YouTube. Indescribably awful.
