He will never bring it back for one reason, he completely left the past behind.

CBC finally aired an interview with him. Of course it mostly focuses on DreamPeace, but it's still nice when the major public broadcaster acknowledges anyone from Canada's metal scene (they get next to no rep here at home): https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/b-c-musician-music-for-insomnia-1.6934759

Finally the back catalogue is on Spotify. Ocean Machine, Infinity, Physicist, Terria, Accelerated Evolution, Synchestra, even the first Ziltoid album. Seems like all the deeper cuts are there too. I'll be telling my grandchildren about this day.

I can definitely listen to Lightwork a little bit more, but It seems to be one of the wekeast albums since SYL or Dark Matters. It just isn't in his usual range off excellent to perfect. Its a good album, just not a great album. I just hope it's not a sign of whats to come in quality from Devin, and its just a normal lull that any artist will eventually have with a discography the size of Devin's.

Freaking Devin Townsend, keeps surprising me years after years. Truly one of the musical genius of our century.

Lightwork is very good. Really enjoyed my first listen, and I know many more will come.

Just listened to his & DIR EN GREY’s discography’s for the first time, and I just gotta say, his is amazing, how did I not hear this sooner? (DIR EN GREY was pretty good but I gotta get into them more) everything I heard from him was incredible tho

Lightwork is a pretty safe album thats still enjoyable. Id say Disc 2 is a little better as it has more variety. Lightwork is an enjoyable album that I suspect wont have the staying power. Its probably the most lackluster album aince Z2, however Devin is just one of those rare artists that really does not put out bad albums.

Dont get me wrong, but in between all Devin's styles and influences sometimes it kinda sounds like Ghost, even if it's stuff that Devin has been making for decades.

I have the feeling that the album "Nightwork" is the album that Devin really wanted to present. "Nightwork" is much more interesting than "Lightwork".

No, I don't think so. Rather that Nightwork were songs that didn't exactly fit his idea for Lightwork. You might not really like Lightwork, it IS the album Devin wanted to make.

Save for a couple of songs on Nightwork (Factions, Boogus, and Precious Sardine to a degree, which is like The Great Masturbator's ugly brother) nothing to write home about for me personally. But then again, I haven't been feeling Devin's music since Epicloud, which is a shame because most people seem to like his recent output.

I'm afraid Devin will not be going back to the Epicloud way of producing music anymore. He's found a happy place with this new way of arranging. Sorry man, hate to see a Devin fan leave the flock.

Lightwork on a first impression seems like a watered-down version of Empath, nothing to write home about save for Dimensions; the latter half of the album has some nice moments too. Nightwork on the other hand is much more interesting and has a lot going on. Devin really has found a safe sound this past decade and is sticking to it.

Respectfully disagree. I think the songwriting on Lightwork is better (albeit more chaotic) than on Empath, but more progressive. Devin has found a style with Empath and he's sticking with it for now. He has said multiple times that this album wouldn't be for everyone, and I think he's right. I think he really enjoyed working on Puzzle and he has taken some of those elements with him on Lightwork. It's definitely less poppy as I was expecting and I completely understand people not getting into this one, but for me it's another step towards the Zappa/Townsend fusion I so immensely enjoy.

I find it fascinating that every Devin album has its fans and that tastes are so different. :-D I can't stand Epicloud, for example, and could not really warm up to most of DTP's later albums... So I was really happy when I realized that I absolutely love Empath and The Puzzle. =) I didn't expect that after the releases before those two... I like Lightwork, but most of the more straight forward pieces already start to get a bit tiring to me after a few listens. But Nightwork is pretty great, I think!

Ah, another Puzzle fan. I had my doubts when Devy announced that one, but man, I really love it. I tend to give the record a spin weekly.

Whats with the 4x boost for moonpeople? Did the song like get mainstream attention or something?

I don't know about the other fans, but I've been listening to the song about 20 times a day, so that'll boost it quite a lot.

I wasn't too convinced on the first listen of The Puzzle, even though I already liked it... It felt a little too fractured to me, and I didn't like the spoken words much. But now, a few listens later, I think the album is just great. Especially when you listen to it with good headphones in the dark and let the music just take you away. It feels very cinematic to me, so many little details to explore, and by now it all feels like one big track. :D

I agree! It feels like a natural progression from the devlab days, glad he's making this kinda weird stuff again

Same here, first listen was a bit ... strange. But I've come to a point that I put on the record twice a week now. Just a great ambient record.

I might need to sit with Snuggles a little longer, but I'm really getting into The Puzzle right now. Not an easy album to listen to initially but it's worth the investment

Puzzle and Snuggles are mesmerizing. On first listen both are interesting, beautiful and have a lot to unpack.
