And funny that you should mention Roll On John because the band performance on that song reminds me of nothing so much as Lenny Bruce and Angelina. It's so fitting that the band (not Bob's harrowed voice, of course) sound like they're playing a Shot of Love outtake - 1981 - the first album Bob released after John's death. Makes the whole thing even more touching.

At first I felt like you, Ralf, bewildered and confused and laughing out loud twice on first listen ("never robbed any churches, never cut off any babies' heads" and, even moreso, "I rode with him in a taxi once, only for a mile and a half but it felt like a couple of months"). For a while I thought it was the solitary dud on the album, but the sweetness of the backing track took hold of me, and over the year-plus since discovery now I've come to love it as much as the others.

The lyrics are clumsy and silly (the more I listen, the more lovably so) but Bob's vocals and the backing band are SUBLIME.
