Dylan folklore says that he wrote this song specifically for Nico, so it’s no surprise that she released her rendition nine years before he did on her album Chelsea Girl. Interestingly, Judy Collins was actually the first to record the song, not Nico, so it’s debatable whether the song was actually intended for Nico. Dylan wrote the song in 1964, but did not record it himself until a year later, during the recording sessions for his album Bringing It All Back Home. An official release of Dylan’s recording did not happen until 1985 on Biograph.

Dylan lived in the Chelsea Hotel (where the Chelsea Girls resided as well) for a few years, with his wife Sara. His first child, Jesse, was born there. But Dylan claims he left the hotel about a year before the Chelsea Girls and the Warhol film.
