wading through some Hot Five tunes I discovered "St James Infirmary" - that's where the studio version's melody is derived from.

There's a lot to love about the electric version, but the acoustic one sounds to me like it was hewn from the very rocks of the earth. Two brilliant musicians, one voice and darkness, darkness, darkness.

If people ever doubt that Bob Dylan has lost his edge, play them this song. It speaks of things on so many levels. I got to stay at the St James Hotel in New Orleans; Bob has a house there Uptown.

The Allman Brothers Band have been doing this song lately, debuted it at last year's Beacon run I believe. Doing it justice, of course.

This song just never gets worse. It is insanely, insanely good. But you have to listen to the right version.

i know this tune's good but it's hailed as the holy grail of his later work, i can't agree with an assertion like that.

Sean Wilentz's book 'Bob Dylan In America' devotes a whole chapter to the artist and the song. Worth reading indeed.

Bob's played this song live more than 100 times over the past 25 years. It can be found on "The Bootleg Series vol. 1-3," which came out in 1997. It does qualify as a bit of a rarity, since it was left off Infidels, but it's hardly unknown or lost to obscurity. Still, glad to see folks discovering & enjoying the song. It's worth seeking out live versions from the '99-'00 era -- very different from the original & still very powerful.
