The lyrics are all over the place, exemplified by the first (and probably most famous) track on this album. It's kind of a jumbled mess, but in a charming way--but not the powerful snapshots of Dylan's genius brain like on "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall". For me, the most powerful statement on this album isn't the call to follow the Tambourine Man but rather Dylan's scathing criticism of the materialistic, war-mongering, hypocritical society he saw all around him expressed on "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)". This is where his lyricism shines, the intense, monotone vocal delivery matching the grim imagery. Is anything sacred anymore? Nothing was back then. What about now?

it's insane that this was not even two years after the freewheelin' bob dylan. and dylan was just 23 when this came out. hard to believe really.

Definitely picked on of the best starts. It's half electric and half acoustic. Blending his old sound with his new.

the acoustic side is just sublime, bob probably couldn't find a better way to end his folk period

I have to say it...... I prefer this over Blonde on Blonde or even Highway 61 Revisited. It's just consistently better (it has possibly the best track list of any album I've listened to). An essential listen for anyone and everyone.

It's a very tough pick between this one and Blonde on Blonde. I'll agree this is more consistent overall, but Blonde on Blonde has this very special feeling to it all and the production is just immaculate... For me Highway 61 is the least impressive of the three, still great but the writing is not THAT good

I think this should be considered the greatest album of all time. Look at it track by track 1) A completely new and unique sound, the first rap song 2) One of Dylan's best love songs, or is it an indictment? Both. Live staple. 3) The first punk song, so damning of the people who were labeling him. 4) An amazing love poem, timeless. "My love she laughs like the flowers" 5) First of the comedic bridge on this album. This album is not all one mood, it's every mood. "I might look like Robert Ford but I feel just like Jesse James" is an all-time great line 6) Hilarious, and multi-faceted. Is he talking about the folk scene? "How come you don't move?" 7) Just listen to that false start, this is Dylan having fun, and it's HILARIOUS 8) One of the best songs ever written. No one can argue with that 9) One of the best poems ever written. Utter abstract brilliance 10) An amazingly powerful energetic piece of beat poetry 11) A masterpiece. The bookend to the greatest album ever

I think it is hard to overestimate its importance on the transitioning of rock music from entertainment to art, bringing that folk integrity into rock n' roll. That alone, gives it a great case for the most important album in popular music to me. Being born almost 30 years after this record was made, is probably the reason why I don't connect with it on a personal level, but I have massive respect for its artistic vision and courage.

I agree, the best Dylan album. He was at the top of his game when he recorded this, and he'd never be better.

Masterpiece all around, but it's the last 4 songs that really make the album.

First and last four are all masterpieces. The 'bridge' is stellar as well, just less 'serious' songs.

I'm always baffled when people talk about this album like it's just a warm-up to Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde. IMO it's significantly better than the former and pn par with BoB, which has more great songs but also has more filler/crap due to its being a double. "Subterranean Homesick Blues" is of course one of the most significant songs of his career and the more Garage Rock/Blues Rock songs like "Maggie's Farm" are far better than the likes of "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Tombstone Blues." Then there are the largely acoustic numbers like "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)," "Mr. Tambourine Man" and "Gates of Eden," which are far superior lyrically to almost anything on Highway 61. For me his five best records are John Wesley Harding, Blonde on Blonde, Blood on the Tracks, Love and Theft and this one. The Basement Tapes is as good or better than most of those five but I don't consider it to be a Dylan record since The Band share equal billing. Anyway, this is essential. Buy it.

Ok fair enough but I wouldn't say there's any "Crap" on BoB. Filler, maybe, but not "Crap".

The quintessential Dylan album, it's just got the best versions of all sides of him. And It's Alright Ma.
