“The First Big Weekend” was Arab Strap’s debut single, released in 1996, and included on the band’s debut album The Week Never Starts Round Here, released the same year. The song’s lyrics describe the narrator Aidan Moffat’s experiences on the weekend of the England vs Scotland football match played during the 1996 European Football Championships. The song’s arrangement set a blueprint for much of the band’s later material, with most of the lyrics being spoken rather than sung (with the exception of the “went out for the weekend” refrain towards the end of the song) over a backing of a drum machine and guitars).
