yes. i was reminded of that line in which she talks about a "paradox of famous anonimity" after reading the article you shared the other day. i posted that song several times on the board but apparently it didn't reach the targets i had in mind, haha

do you mind if i give you a deliberately vague response? >:] there are slight variations in each novel, but i'd say the intoxicating recipe consists of: 1. elusive secret / mystery + 2. traumatic incident + 3. disturbing revelation + 4. bittersweet closure / misleading sense of relief.

aw yeah, the part about him being a reader above anything else reminded me of that speech i shared in the first page of that thread (the one in which he wonders why we still "waste" our time with fictional stories and characters) when faced with the and being bossed around for the res of my life lol", but then admits that he just couldn't resist the urge to base his own life around the pleasure of reading. it's really inspiring to realize that he is also an incisive thinker; it seems like with every new book he decided to exacerbate all those features of his reading habits and of his craft as a writer, and i love the fact that the final product (and here i'm referring to his entire ouvre) ended up being equally elegant and subversive <3

btw, did you notice one narrative pattern both A Heart So White and All Souls had in common? it's something that "happens" towards the "end".

the use of the present as some sort of background for the truly pivotal events of the past is this guy's most unsettling trick, to be honest, you've worded up perfectly what i had been meaning to describe for a while... i guess you've already noticed that the two main "incidents" in Dance&Dream (pérez nuix's late night visit & that night at the club with tupra, manoia, and -lol- de la garza) are told as vague memories by a man who's struggling with both insomnia and fatigue, alone in his own apartment, trying to understand the things he's been told and the events he just witnessed, aware of the fact that those images will suffer some alterations as he tries to reconstruct them in his mind... and, as you said, we're obviously anxious to know and hear more of his own distracted thoughts. also: i would say that All Souls is the more consistently amusing novel, but there is one episode in the third volume of YFT which was pretty close to making me roll on the floor, lol.

(btw: now i kind of regret the perez nuix comparison but i was thinking of how intelligent/intriguing she was when i said that).

yes, the story of the three-legged dog and the theory of complementarity were unforgettable passages in both novels, it's interesting that he ended up including what seemed to be a full chapter from an older work in order to emphasize those thoughts. also, i feel like i should read some Arthur Machen since i've has his name stuck in my head for a couple weeks now.

i'm not sure if i should tell you this, but one thing i realized about the four novels of his that i've read is that they all have pretty much the same structure, and, while the author doesn't directly acknowledge it, he seems to be very aware of what he's doing. in one of his interviews (one i've been meaning to translate for everyone, btw :$) he says that the plot is over as soon as you finished reading and it's only through the writing's cadence, plus the thoughts and questions raised by the novel that it can actually have a lasting effect on the reader. and he seems to be really commited to that vision.

2. All Souls was amazing. in fact, it feels like the genesis to some of the author's obsessions and recurring motifs. i really admire the man's ability to craft scenes that have very little in common in terms of ideas or tone and still make them work as a whole. that's what i thought after going from the hilarious 'High Table' sequence to the tale of the mysterious book hunters society (Kingdom of Redonda section included <3) and, of course, the atypical love affair that seemed to be at the center of everything. haha, and when it comes to ratings i'd say that 4 stars is implying that i could agree with 50 stars ratings as well (and, obviously, my own appreciation of the work in question is bound to change) thing is: i feel like he really surpassed himself with YFT and it kind of set a fairly monumental precedent. but i have to say that this story is just as rich in terms of mystique, complexity, and unexpected hilarity <3

1. "it's more like YFT will now be a reference to the earlier novels?" after going through back-to-back reading sessions with Tomorrow in the Battle... and All Souls, i can say that your statement is true. also: at some point during the second half of Dance&Dream it was pretty much impossible for me to put it down. it becomes increasingly gripping and thought-provoking. he (through bertram tupra) seemed to be determined to challenge your values or -at the very least- asking the most uncomfortable questions without expecting a quick answer. and, well, the third volume had an incredible thematic twist, too. well played, javier. i would say more but don't want to ruin it for you!

quick summary of what i wanted to say: 1. Your Face Tomorrow was worth its length. the last volume was just incredible. i'll try to order my thoughts on why i loved it so much, but right now it really sucks not being around anyone who's read it... : / my only regret would be that i probably missed several references to marías's previous novels... some of them were pretty obvious, but, i'm sure i could have benefited from having reading All Souls or Tomorrow in the Battle... first, but WELL. 2. All Souls is arriving on the mail tomorrow, though, and i'm pretty sure i'll be finished with Tomorrow... before next week. 3. i think you'd really like Petal Dance <3

Jazz Rap isn't very popular these days (a total shame) but it was one of the most influential styles during the "golden age" years. I think this chart is a pretty good starting point if you're interested in that subgenre, ha. It's no surprise that ATCQ dominates like that. Hope you enjoy that YouTube comp, too.

instrumental hip hop: i'd say there are two basic types: beats&breaks compilations (instrumental versions of rap songs/songs), and solo works by producers who didn't necessarily have a rapper in mind when they were assembling their tunes (i.e.: endtroducing... / donuts / pretty much every Flying Lotus or DJ Krush release). you seem to be already a fan of DJ Shadow and i'm sure you'll appreciate this early classic.

whoa-....<3 it's really amazing that you were interested in that song :') if you already like stuff like digable planets and atcq you should probably try more rap jazz groups/albums. they can be pretty smooth/relaxed like http://youtu.be/3eBQgbJ7Glw (jay dee beat!) - or a bit more intense/energetic like: http://youtu.be/wPsA3TsK1Uk - to be honest, i could throw you a mix if you want, haha.

yes, it'd be interesting to learn more about his own ties to the revolution. i'll try to look into that. as for the more recent stuff: i wasn't expecting to read hugo chávez's name at all. i'm really curious about how far reaching the latin american connections might be as the story progresses (maybe there's not much to expect, but who knows?). anyway, after a quick research, i guess Tupra is basically a romanian name.
