Based on your love for Ryan Adams (best artists today, of course) and some other alt-country, I say give Lucero a listen. Much like The Replacements, they started off with more of a punk sound (still drenched in whiskey and alt-country...and more whiskey). As their career went on, they dabbled in all sorts of sounds...alternative, Springsteen-esque jams, bar stompin' tunes, memphis soul, etc. i'd say the essentials are That Much Further West and Tennessee and then maybe Nobody's Darlings and Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers (the start of being non alt-country. very rocking and awesome though).

Oh, I know alllllll about Paz. I even have that "She's Spanish, I'm American" EP autographed by them. I pre-ordered it from his site way back when and it came autographed. They even have the other ones signature over their head and an arrow pointing to the right person. Cute, I know. But that was pretty much the end of my love for him. We get it man, you like sand. A lot. Write some different stuff! Oh man I am totally on the spot now with recommendations considering the Mats were my recommendation. Btw I am very, very jealous you saw Westerberg at the 9:30 club! I have always wanted to go there (I have a Josh Ritter live EP from there) and Paul is on my list of artists still alive I really want to see but haven't. Obviously, the list of dead artists is MUCH harder and way creepier to accomplish.

Great taste! I am super impressed with your Josh Rouse listens. He's great although I haven't really liked an album of his since he decided to do the whole Spanish island thing. Nothing better than R.E.M. either. I am so lucky to have seen them last in '08 (Jones Beach) and then Michael Stipe at the Tibet House Benefit thingy. Based on your love of R.E.M., I think you would really dig The Replacements. They are one of my favorite bands ever. Of all time. Started off kinda loose and punky and then they really, really came into their own and got this hard hitting alternative sound down. Paul Westerberg is a great songwriter too. Much like early R.E.M., their sound has that slight 80s charm from the era. It's kinda pretty much magical, is what i'm saying.

just clicked through to your profile and saw your thing about vinyl ... whenever I'm listening to someone else's iPod or a CD in my car (which is rare) if I feel like tracking it, I use the universal scrobbler. love it. I usually search the artist/album on MusicBrainz and take it from there. http://universalscrobbler.invitationstation.org/
