I saw your comment on John Blake´s page. The picture was horrible. And so is the service at last fm! I uploaded a new picture for John Blake, so if you have the time please vote for my pic. It´s awful with all the wrong pictures! (Walt Dickerson etc) http://www.lastfm.se/music/John+Blake

I've really had to sit & think on this reply; 1) I'm now curious as to which instrument you play. 2) I know what you mean about the classical music; having grown up being made to sit & listen/be quiet while it's playing, it's taken me time to fully recover from my early prejudice. 3) As for the open ear, as I sit & listen to Lisa Gerrard & thinking about the prog I watched about her yesterday; she was saying music is all around us, sometimes in unlikely places; I personally think that music is a universal language for expressing the emotions. 4) As for Miles; I loved the way he explored so many musical forms but I always got the impression he could be opinionated & autocratic in his relations to other people. I could have completely misread that, tell me what you think.

Hmm, well I must have seen Monk playing & I know Fats Waller had sausage fingers & look what he could do! Lets just say I was never cut out to be a musician; just a good enough ear to know what a bloody awful racket I was making. I've spent a happy time listening to those tracks. I especially enjoyed Freddie Hubbard & Tim Hagans. I love Hubbard's Body & Soul, one of my favourite tracks, he sounds so laid back. I've added Tom Harrell to my library, but I think that was a first for me. I was listening to Andy Sheppard after the Portico Quartet & was struck with their musical similarities. Thanks for the recommendations.

Well, emigration put paid to the piano problem, since we didn't bring the piano with us! I'm sorry now that I don't play an instrument, but I don't think I ever had the manual dexterity to play well. I remember failing miserably on the recorder as well! On the subject of trumpet/flugelhorn, have you listened to Mike Metheny, brother of Pat. He has a lovely mellow tone. On my album the liner notes aren't extensive enough to say which tracks he's playing the flugel on, but he always reminds me of warm honey. I'll give those two guys you mentioned a spin.

After your last shout, I realised I hadn't listened to any Mulgrew Miller. So I've been trying to rectify that. The track I heard I really liked, so I've dropped a few more into my library. Funny I just tend to gravitate towards sax & horn players. Might be that I associate the piano with being shut into the front room to practice instead of going out to play! Do you have any bad associations with instruments or musical styles?

You know I'm increasingly thinking that you can't get too much of Brandford. So often one of his tracks comes on & it's like the first time you've heard him; you find something new in the track. I was interested to note that he is tagged as m-base, it's not the first thing that springs to mind when I think of his music, more avant-gard or New Orleans.

Thanks. I enjoyed your Gary Thomas. until I came across [artist]Jessica Williams[/artist] who I totally fall for these days. I don't follow much the life of celebrities (I actually know about the two very little as I have no tv). what should I say? it's bad if people get beaten, worse if they get beaten by their partner. maybe another indicator of the screwed-up life of so many celebrities?
