You asked me a while ago who my favorite soul musician is, and well I just logged in for the first time since then haha. Sorry about the delay. My answer is pretty generic, but it's Marvin Gaye. Love his music. I don't think I've heard many other singers that really make me feel the music like he did.

i'm not usually one to listen to pick-me-up albums when depressed-- prefer to allow a sad album distill whatever pain i might be feeling even more fully so i can step into it and understand it more entirely. probably not a particularly healthy habit, haha. that being said, albums that never fail to cheer me up are A Trip to Marineville by Swell Maps; Emperor Tomato Ketchup by Stereolab; and anything by Gong from the early years. there are probably a lot more i'm forgetting but yeah

interesting that you call american beauty a happy pick-me-up album. for me the lyrics are so profoundly bittersweet if not outright sad that i put it on whenever i'm feeling especially down for catharsis. i've cried more times than i'd like to admit (or remember) to box of rain and ripple

cheers! Live/Dead and American Beauty for totally distinct reasons. My knowledge of Dead shows is pretty lacking but the one closest to my heart is 10.31.1980 radio city music hall. how about you?

Jim Noir looks pretty interesting I'll be sure to check it out. I think the new layout looks better than the beta did; the beta looked like Google 2.0. I dislike the artist pages because the statistics are in the middle of the page and everything is XBOX HEUG. What's your opinion?

Try the new Ufomammut album, Oro - Opus Primum, and Brujas del Sol, Moonliner Vol2, if you haven't already. Also try Felipe Acrazas - Induction to the Subconscious (its not 2012 though) Cheers.

*incoming essay* I've never found music that difficult to "get" or get into, tbh. I find little emotional depth in most noise (asides from maybe Yellow Tears), but the aggression that album holds is quite hard to match for me, and I like that. Suffice to say, when I started listened to loads of avant-garde stuff, a little part of me wanted to hear the most extreme example of music. I came across two genres: harsh noise and lowercase. While I'm not into lowercase much, I found the high pitched squealing that Merzbow often uses in PD to hold it all together for me, and it was because of that that I started to really dig it. Also, of course, the usual stuff about layers developing, but if anything I only look for sections which have rhythm in that respect.
