Nice, you've accomplished your ">5.4k artists played" personal record :-) ... I saw us both in the "Discovery Leaderboard" section (Oct. 2-8), you are at #2 place there: last DOT fm/user/TheAlexH/listening-report/week ... How is life on your position of the Earth currently? I assume you also avoid public crowds lately in these pandemic times, same as us here in good old Germany ... Stay safe, and enjoy the songs - and more activities - on this magnificent Friday, Esther

Hello Ezears, I'm so glad to see that even though it's been years since we last chatted here we still have a very high musical compatibility. I hope you're doing well during this strange time.

Hi Andy. I’m very rarely on here but I guess I still like to check my stats periodically! I’m doing well, hunkering down but thinking of those who are still having to work. When we see the other side of this I think we may adopt these current daily health habits as a new way of life. But I also wonder in today’s society how long before people, especially the younger generation, will let down their guard. Everything becomes yesterday’s news before long sadly. Stay safe!

I guess this is the reply you refer to? Well it's here and not there :) Haven't seen you much on twitter; but I'm only there sporadically anyway. Most of my RTs are about Brexit or Trump I guess. Hard to know which is worse though at least you can get rid of him in 4 years while the UK is screwed in so many ways for at least a decade ...

I do like the idea of following a thread on one page so I guess this change makes sense. There's even a 'like' button! I find myself on twitter less and less lately. The ugliness and even ignorance that clouds any good intentions is so pervasive, it goes beyond expressing, rightfully, disdain with the election(s). Twitter is supposed to be my musical escape! It'll be interesting (now there's a safe word, one I hate see used and here I am using it!) to see what the following months/years brings. On a less serious note, at least there's always a popfest to look forward to--you'll have to let me know if you plan to go to any!

Ooh, I hadn't seen the like button! I'm off to the Philippines for three weeks on Sunday so missing the Madrid Popfest, which has a great line up (The Clientele!). You have any lined up? The Bats new LP is fantastic if you haven't already heard it. Not sure if it's your thing but Copenhagener (though lives in Berlin) Agnes Obel is fantastic. Her music verges on classical with off kilter, slightly surreal lyrics. You're right about twitter of course so apologies if my political RTs interfere with your escapism ;) Try my RT with Alan Partridge (you *are* familiar with AP right?) commentating on Norwich's goals at the weekend :D (and fabulous goals too)

philippines was good; but not great. Far too humid and a bit of a pain to get round as there's so many islands and so few ferries...

I'd die in that humidity! Yes I can imagine. Are you sporting a healthy glow? I've found plenty of footage from Madrid Popfest. Shame the festive atmosphere wasn't condusive to The Clientele's melancholic mood. And thanks for your RT. It's a great EP by Cig Alert courtesy of Jeff Shibley.

I have not posted a shout in many a year. A big gap when I was not on here at all, but, kinda missed the place. Liking the charts, so much for me to catch up on ! Which means there is a lot I have not heard ! Have a great 2016!

Would like to. But I'm not so inspired as of late with the interviews. I have to write another two this week. Maybe you wanna help with some questions?

So I discover Housework through your twitter and then find you've only listened to four tracks!? They're rather good though aren't they? Remind me of BSP (especially the vocals)

Yeah, been a bit quiet on twitter. No special reason really; just laziness I suppose... I thought the radio was a subscriber only thing. Haven't used it myself for yonks - mostly thanks to all the other myriad sources of music I have at my disposal! Hear anything you liked? How was your holiday?

Thunderstorms in parts of Europe I hear; but blazing hot sun here. Scorchio! (you do know the Fast Show right?) Hope the weather is fine over next weekend as, against my better judgement, I'm camping... Anyway, enjoy Spain (Bilbao is supposed to be great!) and don't forget to slap on the factor 50 - it wont always rain ;)

Thanks! And the best thing? They all make great music! (well, most of them). No I haven't managed to bag a DJ slot at Indietracks. Frankly, Esther, they can't afford me ;) Ah, Paul Messis! Yes, I'd probably bought the LP or single by then. He's excellent. You did write Peru though!

Yeah, I can go with those comparisons too. Ah on Firestation. Nice because I haven't scanned their catalogue for ages. Did you hear we took the Close Lobsters to a Karaoke bar in Copenhagen at 5:30am after the Popfest? The only place still open at that time; but sadly they couldn't be persuaded up for a turn... Really great blokes though! You mean the new Peru single? Yes, great; but I only just added it to my buy list on bandcamp so how on earth do you know I've heard it? Have you hacked into my computer? ;)

Funny yours says the same thing :) Great find The Gits! Cover quite a range of sounds too though a bit of Smithsesque jangle seems to be their main focus. Where'd you get "A Retrospeculative". Though can't be much on there that's not on Drink Milk (unless they're actually the same thing?)

Cool, didn't know this live video. What a treat. A retrospective would be nice indeed. I wonder who would be interested in putting that out. I don't use twitter much, just the odd post to promote a blog post, but I'm barely there checking what people are posting. Sorry! I just posted another interview on my blog if you are interested about The Lemon Sleepers. Are you in a band or just an indiepop fan?

Hi there, if I remember correctly yes he was in the band and he was the guy that they used to call him Camel. I can go through my last.fm messages if you want. I didn't end up interviewing him, I should have, but I did interview David who used to be the keyboard player. But how come you are into the Train Set? I'm a bit surprised. Thanks for enjoying the interviews.

That was The Secret History who split. My Favorite were MG Jr's earlier band. Now he seems to be trading under My Favorite again. All so confusing; but the music is divine so it's all good :) That's the Donna Tartt book right? Haven't read it either; but heard very good things. Just bought Viv Albertine's book, which I'm really looking forward to reading.

oh, you should have a listen to My Favorite and The Secret History (and follow @michaelgracejr on twitter). Here's one from the former http://youtu.be/LuBIz0G_pls and one from the latter: http://youtu.be/DvmfsbT2NfY. They played a wonderful set at Indietracks last year ;) And, yes, Paul Messis is great - another Bleeding Gold Recs find I think. There is nothing like vinyl especially if it's 10" and coloured!

I'm going to Indietracks now so I'll obviously let you know how great it was afterwards (and possibly during) ;) I'll join you in NYC Popfest envy though - great line up! Have you seen the My Favorite vinyl that'll be on offer there?

Think the Spotify ones miss quite a few tracks; but I'll upload there too (if that's the right word). Brit culture is the best of course and you're quite right to be wooed by it :) The rest of Europe is a better place to live if one cares about social justice though...

well, after I've DJed I'll likely upload a mix :) Did you catch my other 2 (ace obviously) DJ sets? One of them appears to be still in mediafire. Haven't heard of any last.fm changes. Guess they'll just happen and I'll hate them and be grumpy for a while and then carry on. The benefits of subscribing aren't very large so I might let it slide next time though I do find some validation in the occasional visits I get ;) This Appleton fellow appears to be English - you're not actually a Brit are you? Though I've heard the Beeb have a whole channel over there these days. Doesn't look like a young Moz to me...

That's very nice of you to say; but look at the other shots. Much closer to lucky than pro! I like my nighttime shots of the little mermaid though. Barcelona is amazing for the architecture. Haven't been anywhere else though. Alistair has lots of pics of San Sebastian on his flickr. Think he was in Barcelona last year too. Everyone raves about Bilbao - the food is supposed to be wonderful! I've never heard of Alistair Appleton I don't think - musician? Yeah, I can't remember who was drumming - bet Wally knows!

Yes, he's an very good photographer. I saw you have photos of The Clientele. I was really quite chuffed when Alistair used my photo of Alasdair in Malmo on his blog: https://www.flickr.com/photos/91301645@N00/719348136/in/set-72157600647812134. Really lucky shot of course... Though I wasn't there I'd forgotten this; but Dan joined NP on stage (or vice versa) for a 1000 Violins cover (if I recall correctly) in Hamburg: https://www.flickr.com/photos/northernportrait/sets/72157622521355560/. I don't think any audio or video exists of this momentous event unfortunately. Gosh Spain in July will be roasting! But I guess you're used to that in southern California! Have fun though - where are you going? And I hope you don't mind me saying: very pretty and a lovely smile! :)

Amazingly confusing; but very enjoyable! And new music discovered too! And who do Autumn Stones remind me of? I know Stefan really well; but the others not so much - I only really see them when they're out with Stefan. Stefan & Michael do an acoustic set at a bar in town - lots of old Danish Schlager type songs with a few indie classics thrown in for good measure and an occasional NP song if asked. I've seen the TVPs quite a few times back in the day - always enjoyably shambolic. This is from the comeback gig filmed from just about where I was standing: http://youtu.be/b2RtyOlOOk8 (Ed Ball on bass & Mark Flunder just took it upon himself to play the piano at the other side of the stage. Think it was John Bennett on drums) Turned out that Alistair (@unpopular) was there as well; but I didn't know him then. He has some great high quality photos of the gig on his flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/unpopular/sets/52796/. Which one is you with David Gedge?

Oh wow! Fantastic! Really glad you like it! There's a certain majesty to the best songs I think. Next time I see Stefan or Michael I'll let them know :) Actually last time I saw Stefan I think he said they were re-recording and/or remastering some of them. Though he could have been referring to the recently released re-recordings of the first two Northern Portrait EPs. My memory is a tad hazy as it was a while ago and beers had been consumed... :)

Hey Esther. It's been a while and I was browsing last.fm and saw your name. How are you going? I hope everything is well with you over there in the US. Things here are.. interesting this last year. But that's a long story I won't get into here. I need some new music to listen to. Name me 3 artists I should check out. I've always liked your taste and you've never gone wrong in the past :)
