Maybe its that I have lost passion for abstract at and explanations. Should visual art be "explained"? I'd rather take it for the value it has to me, visually, on contact instead of valued interpretations. I might be going to NYC this winter instead of Vancouver (Emily Carr is no longer an option despite the fact that I've spent $100 USD on application fees...) If you are thinking of visiting the Big Apple as well, give me a call! Will be with the boyfriend and a few friends.

You like Sonic Youth now? Older > newer. Also, I have a new found hate for the art world, especially abstract culturally/ commercially insignificant art that really is just bs.

To simplify, you would invest more in social reformation while I'd go the more direct route increase GDP by exiling them from the system. The psychology in reform is practical & proven, but how states execute them is the primary concern for success. The U.S. invests quite a bit in socialized health care for the lowest tier income. We invest quite a bit as well in schools, but still low marks. The question is how to improve these existing programs. It seems easier to pursue in countries that excel industrially because the standard of living vs. income is arguable, but when a family has their basic needs met, the motivation turns to improving class through work & education. How do we advertise the values in this without the obvious benefits? Programs in the U.S. often fail by following intl. models.

You and I both are aware that success is based on ability. Yes, the state should bear the responsibility of nurturing cultural ambitions, education, health, and protecting contracts to keep peace within society. But after our basic human needs are met through the state, it's up to ability to determine a winner & a loser in society education, and ultimately, the market. You can expect all individuals to have ambition. You can't expect to "democratize" their opportunities without realizing the consequences, which is essentially, rewarding failure. In Tolstoy's "War and Peace", one of the main characters attempts to liberate an impoverished village post-war by offering them schools & education. They refused, knowing the benefits of education but simply caring little for themselves or the advancement of society. Now apply that to the low graduation rates of the low income tier. They have the same resources, but refuse to learn! The individual, not society, is responsible for this.

The marketable nature of achievement is the only true, and essentially human, judge of the mind. We as individuals judge the value of an item through our own pocket. When you say, equal opportunity, you imply a democratized chance for anyone to enter a market with a success. Competition is necessary for the development (technological/ structural) of any market for the incentive of profit. If a small start up company fails in the shadow of a larger, more efficient competitor, are we to financially assist them & annul them of their failures for shoddy products & poor business sense? Similarly with the individual, in our Western society, students have access to similar information & public resources for them to succeed in life, but if a poorer student fails to pursue their ambitions (if they have any) and perpetuate the mistakes of their parents, are you, as an employer, going to give them "equal opportunity"?

What you are advocating is: Social market: The name given to the economic arrangements devised in Germany after the second world war. This blended market CAPITALISM, strong LABOUR protection and union influence, and a generous WELFARE state. The phrase has also been used to describe attempts to make capitalism more caring, and to the use of market mechanisms to increase the EFFICIENCY of the social functions of the state, such as the education system or prisons. More broadly, it refers to the study of the different social institutions underpinning every market economy. /// There is one problem with this: The production of low-commercial, highly spiritual products are subjective to the individual whether you are advocating the arts or some field of special interest. Under your precedence of "equal opportunity", how would we assess who's/what's granted? Time and effort shouldn't be the only determinants of what constitutes as productivity.

There is no free dinner. The burden of "income redistribution" falls upon the middle class globally to support the poor. The rich have freedom of movement and will restation their business or families to districts/ countries with fewer taxes (Singapore, Hong Kong, Egypt), which is why many successful Scandinavian entrepreneurs come to the U.S. Why should I support someone who hasn't rightfully earned their dinner? More importantly, why should I make a bad investment in someone who has no ambition to become a productive force within society? The speakers fail to address the freedom of choice in first world countries, with much of the impoverished class propelling their plight by making poor decisions. Am I responsible for high illegitimacy rates amongst the poor? The materialism and ignorance that propels debt? What bothers me most about the liberal agenda is the annulment of responsibility.
