About my new obcession: 50 years ago, on this day, 25th April of 1974 this song was illegally played a little after midnight on the radio. This was green light signal for revolutionary armed forces with the huge support of the population to seize the capital, ending a long lasting dictatureship and the unwanted war overseas. It became a hymn for the Carnation revolution, bringing hope, freedom and diplomacy. No bullets were shot on this coup, and the red Carnation flowers become a symbol because the flowers were given to the soldiers by a women who wear them. This song was not supposed to pass on the radio, but when freedom fighters ocuppied the national radio they found the song on the banned/censored box , and they uses it. The song is very political, although its simplicity, Grândola is a village that had a boom in the early 20th Century, because the presence of mines to exploit. state police, who tortured people and had ears everywhere. Because of that the village was know as a revolutionary land. José Afonso wrote this song before a concert on this village. For me, this song, is more important than the national hymn, "Grândola, Vila Morena" changed the fate of a nation. I will try put here the translated lyrics: "Grândola, brown town Land of fraternity It's the people who lead Inside you, oh city Inside you, oh city It's the people who lead Land of fraternity Grândola, brown town On each corner there's a friend In each face there's equality Grândola, brown town Land of fraternity Land of fraternity Grândola, brown town In each face there's equality It is the people who lead In the shadow of a holm oak Which no longer knew its age I swore as my companion, Grândola, your will Grândola, your will I swore as my companion In the shadow of a holm oak Which no longer knew its age" Long live freedom! Fascism never more!
