I've moved my streaming to Qobuz now that they're available in Canada. I now have a sound system capable of playing Hi-res and I really appreciate it. Only thing is there's no social aspect on the site but they have a member's forum apart. Still at least we have Last.fm and I'm happy to pay my dues for this to continue...

Appears neither of us can get enough Alfa Mist in our lives. First artist I've heard in a long time I can play on repeat and just not tire of it. Helluva period in time for British jazz. Cheers.

Yep, I know what you mean, he's one of those artists creating great music worth listening to in depth but that you can also have on in the background. Another new british jazz great I'm finally going to get to see this year is Shabaka Hutchings, one of his 4! bands was meant to come to Montreal when covid hit. Now he's added Montreal with "The comet is coming" I can't wait...

Hey, I hope you're well. I saw your comment on the Alfa Mist page regarding the resurgence of British jazz and I was wondering whether you have any recommendations of current jazz bands/movements that are worth checking out. I wasn't that much into jazz until fairly recently, but I've really been enjoying my explorations so far. Lately, I've been on a Miles Davis and Sun Ra binge in particular, but I'd love to delve a little into current-day jazz as well. Cheers!

Hi, I'm by no means a jazz expert but it's my pleasure to share with you the recent jazz I've been into. BadBadNotGood, Ruby Rushton, Girls in Airports, GoGo Penguin, Ezra Collective, Mammal Hands, for "easy listening" groups Kamasi Washington, The Comet is Coming, Nubya Garcia, Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah for more challenging listens

P.S. Let me devote this track (e.g. available at spotify/deezer) to your anniversary: ... genre: experimental/minimalistic -> from album ("violin edition (1st album)"): ... '1 day after February 13' (this track has 121 beats per minute) ... https://www.last.fm/music/Erkan+Y%C4%B1lmaz/_/1+day+after+February+13 ... btw: here in Germany we now have to wear masks when driving bus, shopping etc... And at your place, Phil ?

Well - I don't have the bookstore anymore because my husband and I retired (yay!) and sold it to our younger partner... :-) I never had my feet up in the bookstore because I was working all the time and I was a mom of a young one. Any time I tried to check out the books, someone would come up and say, "Do you work here?" My feet are up now , though - and I always have a book on the go (or music on the play). :-D And you?

Music , books and movies are my obsessions. Music and books everyday, films at the weekend. I was self employed as a shiatsu massage therapist but now I'm employed by Canada Post, delivering mail on a country route. Maybe now I'm getting job benefits I can look to retire one day, too!

We share those obsessions! I hope you do get good benefits and a very happy retirement, Phil. And all the music, books and movies you would like to fill your abundance of free time! Cool that you have a country route in Canada! I love Canada and would live there in a heart beat. My life is rooted now in NM and that's good, too... :-)

Hey there, Phil ! Good to see your avie & message - thanks for that... :-) SUPER compatibility, btw... :-D I seem to have fallen back into the hermit music listening mode I occupied pre-Lala/Rdio days. I miss the visitors list that used to appear on the top right of this page. I met a lot of people by returning those visits & saying hi. Ah well. Ch-ch-ch-changes! Best to you! <3

It's good to see some familiar faces/avatars still around. Best to you , too! I don't get much chance to chat but I like knowing that we're a community of sorts. A "hermit" community. I installed a extension on my chrome browser that shows me how many of my friends have listened and how much, when I visit an artist page on Last.fm https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/friends-who-listen/meggmbmcebhnbamegfmejpokkjhcnmih

I'm not on Chrome and I never installed an app but I see that on every artist page I visit here. I tend to check it out before I recommend something to someone. I thought it just came with Last.fm. As on old hippie who lived in community for years, I like knowing that we're a "community of sorts" also. :-D Your shout today reminded me. Cheers!

Oh, good.. I'm a bit in awe of your behemoth of a library actually so will have to pace myself on recommendations. My tastes (I wrotes testes there, but covered my tracks with aplomb, I feel), are 60s psych, rock-steady and dub, punk/new wave roots and indie, early 70s ( Island, Vertigo labels esp), deep-soul-of the Dave Godin collections ilk, funky-butt dance music, and experiments and curiosities in general. And a fair bit of folk and 'americana' , blues, jazz, world, but without claim to expertise. Music-lover, basically. Pleased to see another June Tabor listener here, by the way! Hip-hop is a long shot, but never say never on the listening front.. Kate Tempest I know a little - I'll sip and wait for effect, thanks. Making a bit of a mess of your shoutbox so I'll leave you be now,

Hi, well, if you've got the kettle on I won't say no.. Happy to pass something on if it looks like a winner, though might be a challenge.. I've recently heard and enjoyed https://www.last.fm/music/The+Folk+Implosion/_/Natural+One , give that a go maybe? Oh, and apologies to Beyondwithin (just in case of passing by) - I see I knocked a lump off his name with my manky typing before..

Yep, you scored again. I didn't know them. Spotify search didn't come up with much until I saw they had them down as "Folk Implosion" without "The" I'll be chasing up his solo stuff too. Have you listened to KIng Krule, Loyle Carner or Kate Tempest? Distinctive voices I don't know if they're your cup of tea?

Hello Mr James, I had a great morning yesterday playing your library, so just saying 'hi', and thanks. I suspect I wandererd over from Pdna2, else Beyondwith, who you already know - I'm expanding my horizons - and great to find such brilliant libraries in close succession. I wouldn't normally drop in uninvited, but you seem like a cup of tea and a chat kind of guy, so hope that's ok.. You might enjoy https://www.last.fm/music/Arbre+Noir/_/Madurai ? Cheers

Hi Phil, gosh it's been a while since I dropped in on you, glad to see your plays are still going strong. you've done 200,000 plays and I've only just toggled half that today so it seems a sackful to me... Not sure I've got any standout new recommendations for you, but I'm partial to Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks 'I Scare Myself', at the moment, so have a go on that maybe? All the best to you!

Merry Christmas, Phil. If you could invite any (deceased) musician to join you for a celebratory dinner tomorrow, who would it be and why?

Merry Christmas Michael. I'd have to wonder if they'd want to be revived, just to have a meal with me ;-) but I suppose Leonard Cohen would be too much of a gentleman to demur. He would also get into the religious and mythological symbolism of resurrection...so that could be interesting.

Hi, You have a great library-- very well rounded too. Looks like you've been around here for some years. I almost gave up on the place, but it has at least improved from a couple years ago when the beta launched. I'm sure there's lots to discover in your library, and we definitely have lots of common artists.
