Jazz Advance is such an insanely innovative and unique album for its time. Yeah, Unit Structures is his best and one of the greatest albums of all time, but Jazz Advance should be shown some love too. His playing on that was the perfect mix of in and out playing, and he was so aggressive, gestural and angular.

I think that the free movement was the weakest era in jazz, pianistically speaking... Every other (jazz) style had numerous piano legends associated with it, but free jazz only had Cecil Taylor. He was unquestionably great, and there was no close 2nd. In fact, I can't even think of another so-called "free" pianist that i like to listen to...

Keith Jarrett and Sun Ra made some pretty wild stuff man. Cecil is great but dismissing free jazz pianists as a whole because you like his playing the best is kinda lame tbh

Marilyn crispell, Richard grossman and georg graewe are worth checking out. As another commenter mentioned, things like Keith Jarretts Munich concert (2016) show his talent for playing in a freely atonal context. Sun ras acoustic stylings are top tier, you just got to find the right things, like sunrise in different dimensions. I’m sure theres plenty more out there

Keith Tippett can fullfil someone's needs in free jazz piano. Especially something like The Unlonely Raindancer

I think they call it free jazz... because nobody will pay you to play like that

Re-listening to a lot of the free-jazz 'classics' and Unit Structures is by far the most difficult and challenging listen of them all IMO. There's just barely anything melodically to hold on to for the entire duration. Parts of it have more in common with 20th C modernism than jazz

Somehow I managed to miss hearing of his passing until just now. One of the real true geniuses of Avant-Garde and Free Jazz. Listening to him play, especially solo, is like being tuned in to a different wavelength and hearing transmissions from another dimension. So many fantastic albums to his credit and so much boundary destroying -- saying he "pushed" boundaries isn't enough -- music. Rest in peace, Cecil Taylor.

"Somebody told me that when Cecil was asked how he liked the way i played, he said, 'He plays all right for a millionaire.' Now, that's funny; until i heard that i didn't think he had a sense of humor." ---(from MILES DAVIS: THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY)

Creator of some of the most intense and at times beautiful records in the history of jazz. The sounds he coaxes from his piano in many of his solo live albums are incredible.

его считают отцом фри-джаза, на фри-джаз это не похоже, потому что гораздо круче
