Trip-hop music is widely considered to be part of electronic music. However, unlike most sub-genres of electronic music, trip-hop has a mostly organic sound that rarely puts emphasis on electronic instruments. At first, bands like Portishead have been considered ‘alternative rock’ in the lack of a term like trip-hop; however, the message of most trip-hop music is different from the message of most rock music. Also, guitars aren’t used often and, when they are used, they are used in a moderate proportion, whilst drums and vocals are the main instruments. Trip-hop couldn’t be considered pop music, as most trip-hop music hasn’t reached enough popularity, while popular bands like Massive Attack aren’t associated with pop music.
Trip-hop is considered to be a very abused tag, used for artists that couldn’t be considered ‘trip-hop’. After the initial success generated by Portishead’s Dummy album, in the mid-/late ’90s discussion took place on the subject of so-called ‘trip-hop’ bands using the Portishead formula without presenting enough innovations to be considered not clones.

If someone says 'only female vocals', they haven't listened to enough trip-hop. It's a huge genre.

Oh and down-tempo for sure, definitely a slower beat. Music is more melodic and soulful than other forms of electronica I find.

trip-hop is the type of music I listen to when I want to open my mind or just chill out to when I go to bed. A bit of massive attack or portishead is where it's at. I agree with others here that I would classify it as experimental electronica with a dash of jazz and hip-hop, and while I love the combo of trip-hop with female vocals, I don't think female vocals are necessary to be classified as trip-hop. No way.

How can Vespertine or stuff like Hunter or the video version of All Is Full of Love not be trip-hop?... That being said, defining trip-hop is almost always subject to failure. Trip-hop is a mood or a movement rather than a genre. You feel something is trip-hop rather than defining it. So stop lumping it with hip-hop or acid jazz. It isn't hip-hop (where's the attitude, the message of hip-hop?)) and it isn't acid jazz either.

There's absolutely no reason to say trip hop has anything to do with female voices. I mean, massave attack doesn't use female voices very often and they kind of started it. When defining useless genres like triphop you can just say "it's kind of a merge between A and B" Where in this case A is hiphop and B is acid jazz. And since hiphop usually uses rap vocals and acid jazz uses female vocals often both of them work pretty well on triphop beats.

Trip Hop is the best genre of music. Trip Hop is dark version of electronic with hip hop beats and female voices.

I'm just sayin', trip-hop isn't just dark, downtempo electronica, it's dark, downtempo electronica which is heavily influenced by hip-hop.

Anyone else think describing Bjork as trip-hop is ridiculous? Experimental electronica does not trip-hop make, like, at ALL. Bjork is about as far from hip-hop as it's possible to get. Going out with Tricky for 2 months doesn't make an artist change genres!

This is the genre that haves most artists I am not sure if I like or not: sometimes I love the music and others I find that same music boring as hell. Oh so unsure...

Just bumping my poetic definition of trip-hop: In fact, my real definition of trip-hop would be this: Trip-hop is the sound of a postmodern soul on an empty midnight street under the utopic rays of far stars... I haven't taken this from any book or anything like that, I thought about it last winter when listening to tracks like DJ Krush's Crimson.
