Technical black metal is a rather recent innovation seeing light in the 2000's with Deathspell Omega, partially owing its existence to Death Metal band Immolation. However, pure technical black metal is under no circumstances an off-shoot of death metal. It is rather the personal sound of certain death metal bands that have served as an inspiration for this new take on Black Metal. Unlike traditional black metal, lo-fi production and aesthetic isn't as often employed, with many bands opting for a clear and precise sound; letting the inherent static in the often used dissonant riffing stand for the sonic wall.
Some technical black metal bands do, however, take after Technical Death Metal in terms of virtuosic skill and verbose dexterity. A very small niche, technical black metal have yet to establish itself on a larger basis, being at the moment a small and identifiable sound between a sparse number of bands, most notably Deathspell Omega and Krallice; which have influenced several bands, that in turn have brought their own twists and personalizations to the genre.
