New jazz is a style of Trap that developed from the SoundCloud underground community in the early 2020s. The style was pioneered by producer Amir and later coined by rapper/producer Lunchbox, who first popularized the genre outside of its immediate SoundCloud niche.

New jazz is characterized by its colorful and repetitive synth work, a feature derived from syncopated, less-abrasive Rage music. The use of synthetic saxophone and trumpet presets is also common as well as analog snare fills and instruments like e-pianos and synthetic organs. New jazz instrumentals often emphasize a tresillo-esque bounce, most clearly heard in its syncopated lead melodies, and at times, its hi-hat drum programming. Typical new jazz production incorporates a diverse array of bass instruments, referencing dizzying CTM 808s and wonky analog bass as often as every measure. Certain new jazz also incorporates cute and playful vocal loops, often sourced from popular songs and online loop packs.

Producers like фрози , Tenseoh, and venny would go on to popularize the genre on short-video platforms like TikTok, releasing catchy new jazz instrumentals as shorts and on digital streaming platforms. Upon going viral, new jazz would both influence and be influenced by a number of genres, namely House, Jersey Club Rap, and PluggnB.
