Wiki

Dungeon rap is a style of Hip Hop that takes the slow, lo-fi production of Memphis Rap with the fantasy aesthetics, sound design and melodies of Dungeon Synth. While their origins were on the opposite sides of the globe, a connection was made by the two because of their lo-fi style, reliance on cassette tapes, and use of drum machines and cheap hardware to create a sinister atmosphere. Dungeon rap is characterized by slow, dark production with heavy use of synthesizers and sampled hooks from Memphis rap artists. Like its predecessors, dungeon rap is generally released on cassette tape.

Following the phonk explosion in Eastern Europe and Russia during the mid 2010s popularizing the Memphis rap style in the areas, dungeon rap was first started by Ukrainian artist DJ Sacred under his alias DJ Armok later in the decade. The style can first be traced to his first EP God of Blood (Demo) 1998. Germany's Sapphiregawd would follow suit soon after. In 2019, the style blew up even more, with the landmark album Dungeon Rap: The Introduction. This established dungeon rap's style of slow, lo-fi production with hooks sampled from artists of the Memphis rap revival era such as MC Holocaust and Devilish Trio along with dark, synthesized beats playing melodies inspired by dungeon synth's fantastical style. New European artists entered the scene such as Akabxs, Unfair, and Orcaluv. The style would continue to grow in the following years, specifically in Russia with artists like Obscure Castle, Lord Rashnak, Lord Nocturno, DJ Naxxramas, and DJ Astarot often collaborating with each other.
