Celtic rock is a subgenre of folk rock which incorporates influences from Celtic folk and its regional variants. In addition to typical rock instruments, other instruments like fiddle, whistle, bagpipes, or harp are frequently used. The origins of the genre can be traced to Thin Lizzy's version of the traditional song Whiskey in the Jar. The biggest scenes are localized in regions with Celtic roots like Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Brittany (France), and northern Spain, as well as in Irish and Scottish communities of Canada and USA. Some of the most important bands and artists of the genre are Big Country, Horslips, Ñu, The Pogues, Runrig, Alan Stivell, and Tri Yann. Celtic Rock later gave rise to Celtic Punk and Celtic Metal.
