Wiki

Boy band is a name applied to some pop music groups in the 90s. Such a band usually consisted of 4 or 5 young men (early 20s or even teens) in which all the members performed as singers and dancers and the choreography was a vital part of videos and live shows. Boy bands usually recorded fast dance songs and romantic ballads appealing to young female audiences. The forerunners of the boy band style were Take That and it was later popularised by groups such as Backstreet Boys, N'Sync, Boyzone and Westlife.

In the first decade of the 21st century the boy bands were entirely replaced by pop-rock groups in which boys play instruments and male solo pop and dance artists.

In the early 2010's, boybands have come back into mainstream popularity, with the likes of One Direction, the Wanted and Big Time Rush.
