“prom dress” is the lead single of mxmtoon’s second project “the masquerade“. It was met with success on release, reaching over 500,000 streams in just over a week. The song was first conceived after a panic attack she had in her prom dress, which she revealed in an interview with Genius, and after which she promptly tweeted:
“crying in a prom dress, what a mood
wait im gonna write a song called that don’t u dare steal it“
The song itself is a retrospect on Maia’s prom and overall high school experience having introverted tendencies and, as a result, feeling like it wasn’t what it could have been.
“I wrote it based off of a tweet I made about crying in my prom dress, and I decided that there was something really symbolic and deeply ironic about that image, and so naturally, I wrote about it.“
