“Special Girl” is about accepting your personality, good or bad, it details the “flaw” of needing to have drama and tension within relationships and friendships in order to be interested in them and not feeling special or interesting unless something painful is happening, but instead of feeling annoyed or sad about this, the tone is accepting of these flaws, showing strength of character.
This ties into themes on dodie’s other songs about not being a perfect person and wanting to show her audience that.
"'I didn’t realize I’d written two songs called ‘Cool Girl’ and ‘Special Girl’ until I was listening to them together. This leads into the more abstract, less poppy side of the album. You can think, ‘I’m broken. I’m unlovable.’ But ‘Special Girl’ is about saying, ‘This is who I am.’ The ending of it sounds like a hot mess—and that’s exactly what I am in the song.'"
