Christgau's review, for those in front of the paywall: "In a synthworld version of give the drummer some, biracial Scottish trio who aren’t so young anymore insert instrumental tracks that interrupt their trademark march of songs/chants/raps, which has a way of eroding the listener’s good will." (Choice cuts are "Rice" and "I Saw")

That's a pretty shallow review with only a line and a half of actual comments about the music to hide behind a paywall

I suppose part of the struggle of professional music criticism is the sheer volume of material to listen to and critique, so some degree of vapidity is an occupational hazard when confronted with a mountain of sound. His monthly "Consumer Guide" tends to feature "capsule reviews" of roughly a dozen or so records, very few of which extend beyond a couple of paragraphs. He seems to pride himself on conveying the essence of a record in pithy, terse prose, which can sometimes result in simply articulating his taste rather than meeting an album on its own terms. My support is for his entire body of work, the vast majority of which is available on his website, where no paywall exists. I also enjoyed Heavy Heavy significantly more than he did.

Fair enough, I suppose that's really the best thing a reviewer can do for consumers just build a clear and justified imagine of your own taste so that people who usually feel the same know that they can trust your judgement.
