In “Autumn Sweater“, the narrator is at a point in a relationship where there’s nothing new to say and he finds himself silent in his partner’s company. This could be because the two have little in common, or perhaps he knows they won’t work out and this elephant in the room keeps him from putting more effort into keeping her company.
The absence of warmth that he once provided to her in the earlier stages of their relationship necessitates a sweater to keep her comfy now. Tacking on the word “autumn” adds the idea that the sweater is compensating for the warmth lost after the end of summer (the relationship’s start), as well as preceding the coldness of winter (the imminent breakup) to come.
As the singer stands around at this party, he tries to avoid having to interact with anybody there. Alas, this is difficult in this particular social gathering. He waits for his parter, the only one he really cares to be around.
