I think it's really good, not as good as "Oranges and Lemons", but great songwriting.

I was underwhelmed, terribly underwhelmed, by Nonesuch when it came out, and I wouldn't be surprised if I hadn't listened to it again for 20 years. But when I sat down with it earlier this summer, I was quite surprised. I still find Oranges and Lemons difficult to listen to, but Nonesuch is actually pretty good.

this one took a good few listens...then one day it 'clicked' - really strong musicianship on this album - great guitar solos on here (and a couple on O & L)

And if I said that Oranges & Lemons was a "slight" step down from Skylarking, this one's an even bigger drop-off. It doesn't have any of the dazzling psychedelia or good production, it tends to be way too low-energy and morose, and have way too many dirgey songs - it's really unfair to trick listeners into expecting something fun with "Peter Pumpkinhead" and then subject them to a six-song flat stretch before mustering "Crocodile", and then derailing it again between "Then She Appeared" and "Books Are Burning". Based on this... I'm not sure what to expect about the Apple Venus albums...
