This is easily one of my favorite black metal albums ever made. Phenomenal record.

Bathory's debut album may have created the black metal "rabbit hole" for me, but it was this album which threw me way, way deep down into that hole, and brought comprehension. This record is one of a kind, and a truly remarkable, wondrous work of art. RIP Valfar, and thank you for this life-changing experience.

The tremolo picking, harsh vocals, and blast beats say it's black metal. (It's both, really, and last.fm tags and Metal Archives' genre description agree with me.)

The sound doesnt make one black metal. Black metal is an ideology, reflected in the lyrics and overall attitude of the band. If you had a band using tremolo picking, harsh vocals and blast beats but theyre singing about My Little Pony, would that be black metal?

Cool story, bro. I understand that some people insist that you have to have certain lyrical themes to play black metal. I just think they're full of shit. I'll grant that many black metal bands include critiques of modernity, anti-Christian themes, or various other ideological aspects in their lyrics, but really, any attempt to equate an ideology with black metal is ultimately going to fail given aspects like the radical individualism espoused by artists like Fenriz versus the extreme collectivism espoused by artists like Euronymous. At most you might be able to find some aesthetic and philosophical tendencies that usually recur in black metal (a tendency to favour Romanticism over the Enlightenment for instance) but these are ultimately going to be tendencies, not hard and fast rules. Ultimately defining black metal on ideology runs into the obstacle that there simply isn't one coherent ideology behind the music. There are several. So have fun with your No True Scotsman arguments.

Still one of the best albums of all time - metal or otherwise. Every song is a masterpiece, and especially Kong, Kampen and Saknet.

Best of Windir and one of the best if not the best in black metal overall! I can't find a single flaw in this album.

It's wierd. For over a year since I discovered Windir, I always liked 1184 the most...Well today, I listened to Saknet, and it just clicked. I proceeded to do a full album playthrough, and all I can say is OH MY GENTLE JESUS! Arntor = Fucking GOD. Favorite tracks are probably Svartesmeden og Lundamyrstrollet and Saknet. Incredible album...Godlike even. =O
