Whitesnake is a hard rock band, founded in 1977 by David Coverdale (formerly of Deep Purple). They were active primarily in the 1980s, but still tour, albeit with an entirely new line-up (bar Coverdale), to this day.

Some of the most famous musicians who have joined the band for a time were: Jon Lord, Ian Paice, Cozy Powell, Neil Murray, Bernie Marsden, Micky Moody, Rudy Sarzo, John Sykes, Adrian Vandenberg, Vivian Campbell, Tommy Aldridge and Steve Vai.

The band’s early material has been compared by critics to Deep Purple, not only because three past members of the band were once in Deep Purple, but also because of their sound and influences. Later, the band took on a sound more in line with the hair metal style popular in the mid to late 80s, although they never truly left their blues-rock roots behind

Formed in the late 1970s by David Coverdale after leaving Deep Purple, Whitesnake were originally a blues rock band with Jon Lord and Ian Paice from Deep Purple in the band. Despite several albums and constant touring, Whitesnake was unable to attain any significant commercial success in America, though were popular in the UK, Europe and Japan.

After acquaintance with Chris Cuttler, Fred Frith and most importantly, young guitarist John Sykes, David Coverdale decided to turn to a harder, more commercially viable sound.

I can't believe how Coverdale can still sing his tough songs without losing his voice. I always thought he's the best rock singer of 80s'. Moreover, supporting and making songs that based on blues sound indicates they own their roots. I hope Whitesnake will go on to make all of us sing rock ballads for many years.
