Biography

The road is the true path of discovery. For Matt Hutchison, frontman and songwriter of "WHISKEY GO GO’S, the unending highway has revealed mystery and enlightenment, joy and pain, secrets and salvation. “All those years on the road, the trials and tribulations … those experiences made me, and crafted the songs,’’ Matt says.

Matt, originally from country Victoria, spent his early years living in 16 different countries with his missionary mother, Patricia. His lyrics reflect a life on the road, from St Kilda to Stockholm, Oslo to Oahu, Moscow to Mexico City. “I’ve been squatting, living out of suitcases and saying goodbye most of my life,” says Matt. “Those experiences made me reach for the spiritual, to try and go beyond …”

Matt’s extraordinary transient life is the backbone of PROUD TALES TO THEM OF US, the explosive debut album by WHISKEY GO GO’S, out MAY 19. “It’s me,” Matt says. “It’s my life story.”

PROUD TALES TO THEM OF US is unrelenting Southern rock, blues, country and, at its core, the truth stripped bare. Sometimes, compulsive get-happy twangers like the first single True Love, transcend the swamp to the sublime. And solid stompers like 2 Cent Girl, a classic case of mistaken identity, exemplify the lighter side of Matt’s journey. But that is countered with the raw and churning Rodeo, a heartfelt cry for answers and the ongoing search within.

“It’s life,” Matt says. “I sing about what I know and feel. People wear so many masks today. But I don’t want anything between the band and the audience. No shields, no masks, no restraint. I want you to touch our songs, feel the spirit.”

WHISKEY GO GO’S have been blowing audiences away with their explosive live show, including a cracking performance at the sold out Homebake Festival. On stage, vocalistguitarist Matt, together with P. Bone Pebbles (percussion), Michael Noonan (drums) and Dan Trolley (bass) put on a foot stomping show that never fails to get the crowd dancing. “Take a slice of Chuck Berry’s apple pie and drown it down with your finest tasting moonshine,” Beat Magazine said of their live show. “These guys will put a smile on your face.”

So, too, will PROUD TALES TO THEM OF US. “It’s a gift, a bunch of songs I’m proud of,” Matt says. “I wrote them for people to enjoy and relate it to their own travels in life.”
