this shit is so obviously not from the '90s lol. it's a 2010 experiment to see if rivers could write and perform something that his fans would believe is genuine "classic weezer." at most rivers found a pinkerton era tape with a lost riff on it and went from there

in all honesty though, it's no big deal, but listen to the song. what else by rivers in the '90s sounds anything like that verse? nowadays the guys in pavement like to bitch and moan that weezer stole their shtick but that verse sounds infinitely more malkmus than anything else rivers did at the time. and the chorus melody sounds way more like something rivers would've written circa 2010 than anything he (or...anybody?) was doing in the '90s. also, rivers up through green was an absolute master of structure but this song rambles like crazy. to my ear the state farm theme song they did around the same time is way more plausibly '90s than this song is. the truth is out there...

I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Some of the vocals sound very 90s and others are very 2000s. I think a lot of the song was already finished, but other parts were recorded more in the present, the way Rivers delivers "YOU'RE A TRAGIIIC GIIRL" is that type of raw emotion Rivers wouldn't do anymore, but the "Cry and cry and let it out.." part feels very modern, more emphasis on singing and technique than pure emotion, I heard a version where someone enhanced the vocals and it made this even more obvious.

This would fit very well between Falling For You and Butterfly, creating a heartbreaking trilogy and adding more emotional weight to Butterfly. On Falling For You, Cuomo finds someone who loves him just as he is; then, on Tragic Girl, he is full with doubt and tries to force himself to think she is the one, even though he actually wants something more, and he breaks up with her; finally, on Butterfly, Cuomo regrets throwing her away because she really loved him, but it's too late to do anything.

Also, this one is the only song other than Butterfly to use the buttefly metaphor. Cuomo sings on Tragic Girl "This ain't no butterfly girl, this ain't no butterfly love", and on Butterfly "Maybe I need fantasy, life of chasing butterfly", and with that metaphor he means that, in the end, maybe what he needs is to idealize love and not to have an actual girl, because his doubt and indecision ruins whatever good relationship he could have. By saying that she is "no butterfly girl", he is saying that she wasn't what he expected, but not because of her, but because of Cuomo own idealization.
