I initially hated this album (I think my first listen yielded a 4/10), but man, does this album reward repeated listens. Play it loud, without distractions, save for maybe a book.

After knowing of Weakling and "Dead As Dreams" for over 10 years, I've finally given it a listen. I must say that I'm actually quite impressed with the album, it is a whole lot better than I was anticipating. Ironically, I am kind of in the middle as far as my conclusion goes. Definitely enjoy it, don't think it quite lives up to the hype , but certainly feel that the hate some have for it is unwarranted. I have a feeling it will continue to grow on me as I listen to it more.

"Dead As Dreams" has definitely grown on me much more since my first shout above. It is one of those albums that has a lot to take in, therefore requiring repeated listening to truly appreciate. The album deserves to be known as a classic of USBM.

It certainly is an album that is unique within the genre. I've really grown to love this album and understand why it is such a significant album within Black Metal.

Oh no, some complete stranger on Last.fm doesn't like some of the bands I listen to. I'm going to go cry now. For real.

Almost unlistenable during first 10-20 spins, due to very long tracks without any structure, chaotic and muddy production. But later... I really liked it and dug thru it. It's not perfect (some parts are unnecesary and boring), but it will definitely grow on patient listener.

I've known them for a pretty long time now, and I always have the same exact gripe when I listen to them. so the musical ideas are pretty good, sometimes even great all right. like, you can't do much better than the proggy moments in "Dead as Dreams", the crushing doom breakdowns in "This Entire Fucking Battlefield" and the depressive bit towards the end, let's not forget the beautiful folky intros to those two tracks, the part after the rumbling bass solo in "No One Can..." with the faint lead guitar including the "proto-Fell Voices" bit, and... whatever happens in "Desasters..." before the outro, talk about "going out with a bang". and so I remember those bits and they're what keeps me coming back to Weakling. but when I blast DaD, the incoherent song structures with a lot of the "bad" kind of repetition, variationless and mostly unwarranted, the meandering barely legible bits and the "emo kid whose grandma doesn't let him use his double-ended dildo" vox just kill it for me. oh well.

i think you can point Dead As Dreams as the clear point where american black metal took on a life of its own.

Discovered this album thanks to one of my favorite labels The Flenser selling the CD through their site. Fucking great stuff.

About half of later USBM bands either wouldn’t exist or would sound a lot different without Weakling, but that doesn’t mean the later bands are trash or derivative. It’s rare that anyone ever criticises bands for aping Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum, or Emperor, even though a lot of bands ape some or all of them. Krallice, Wolves in the Throne Room, Ash Borer, Fell Voices, Panopticon, and so on are all clearly influenced by Weakling, but they all also have distinct sounds and have produced worthy bodies of music in their own right. Of course, that doesn’t make Dead as Dreams any less amazing or revolutionary, either.

Anyone with a half an oz. of sense will realize that the very existence of Wolves in the Throne Room is entirely pointless.

"Krallice and WitTR are both horrible though." Not really. Especially not Krallice.
