I remember checking out the first song off Bergtatt. Eh, wasn't into it and didn't bother with the rest. I know I listened to the rest (never scrobbled) and I wasn't too impressed. Then I checked out Kveldssanger and loved that one. It's a wonderful folk album. Then I checked out Ghost Entry, super cool single. I got a bit into Nattens Madrigal, I will say I like it a bit more than Bergtatt.

I'd encourage you to check out the rest of their discography, even if it's just a quick check of a few songs, maybe even check our their Norwegian National Opera live album to get a more complete grasp of most of their post black metal work; they got a lot of music for everyone.

Ulver has several memorable moments, but the album Perdition City is their masterpiece. This record gives me sensations that I can't experience in any other form of art, be it music, movies, books..

That Grieghallen album is the first one since Kveldssanger that I can get into. Or maybe I've just gotten old since then...

Because us old guys have been hearing those stupid jokes for years. I turn 35 in November, I feel your pain. Happy belated birthday, fellow Ulver appreciator.

Where at Night the Wood Grouse Play by Empyrium is pretty similar to Kveldssanger, except they sing in English

They're kinda similar to Ulver where they're (currently) none metal projects that came out of a metal project. Bohren used to be a Thrash band called "9 Inch Boots", and the "and der Club of Gore" part of their name is a tribute to the band "Gore"

ikr? I hate how some people only listen to their BM albums, and some to their other works. I think their discography is great through and through

Haven't ever seen anyone from the latter camp. Do they dislike Ulver's early stuff because of the genre's association?

theres tons of them on sites whose names shall not be named, but even a few on here. as for why, i dunno, there are a lot of people who have preconceptions about metal in general and consider it low brow "caveman" music. like they're somehow magically more moral people for not liking it

I love how metalheads are so one dimensional. Look at fucking, Fenris, your perceived God. He listens to all sorts of music.

Let me add a caveat... "some" as in there are a vast majority like this to formulate such an assumption that it would be statistically relevant to expound such a statement.

Vargnatt would be so priceless without those silly male moaning. Even bas sounds almost clearly on this album-like demo. It would be better to invite Tania Stene for singing the female lines.

As much as I love Haavard-era Ulver, it's a tragedy that Grellmund haven't released anything else and killed himself at such a young age. There are some of his riffs on Dødheimsgard's debut album (they used to play together with Aldrahn in a band called Hærfærd, yet there are no recordings), but sadly, that's all.

this is so bad oh my fucking God. You can not and I mean absolutely can fucking not tell me that you sit here and say "you know what... I'm gonna listen to some ulver today" Grow the fuck up. Agolloch is so much better than this shit. They understand what real folk metal is and actually know how to write decent sounding music.

I dunno why people hate them for changing styles. It would be boring if they just made black metal for the past 20 years. Plus their post 90s albums are great and some of the best music in any genre

"the average Black Metal record buyer is a stereotypical loser – a good-for-nothing who was teased as a child, got bad grades at school, lives on social welfare and seeks compensation for his inferiority complexes and lack of identity by feeling part of an exclusive gang of outcasts uniting against a society" me irl

I feel called out, but it's true. Black metal fans are either losers or loser sociopaths. I think anyone that listens to black metal or grindcore should end up on a watchlist. Ticking time bombs they are.

I'm without a doubt a hopeless loser but not a sociopath or a ticking timebomb, or any of that weird drivel ("inferiority complexes" and "feeling part of an exclusive gang of outcasts") from the Garm (?) interview that sounds more like him projecting his own past mindset as a BM musician than anything else.

Ulver only made two good metal releases, the Vargnatt demo and Bergtatt. Nattens Madrigal pretty much sucks, and I say that as a black metal enthusiast. Ulver peaked between 2000 and 2007, Shadows of the Sun marked the end for them as an interesting band.

To me it sounds shallow and lacks atmosphere. Seems like they went for a "raw" production to try to sound like Transilvanian Hunger just for the heck of it in order to end their metal era in with a bang, but failed to create anything of substance since their hearts and creative motivation already was elsewhere at that time. If I want a successful take on that sound from another band during the same era, I'll go for Wolfenzeitalter by Tha-Norr. Of course, this is just my opinion, I've tried to give Nattens Madrigal so many chances over the years, but it never really does anything for me. And I'm into Les Legions Noires bands and other raw stuff like Ildjarn so it has nothing to do with me having a hard time with the raw production.

Ok, at least it sounds more like a point. Though it is quite subjective and I would not agree on its shallowness and lack of atmosphere. And though it is quite often compared to Transilvanian Hunger due to its rawness and speed I guess, to me it is not that similar. TH is much more straightforward and simple, which doesn't automatically mean bad though.

Ulver's main problem as well as one of their main characteristics, at least I think, is that they can easily make everything sound like they're using loops even when they're using live instruments only. The adoption of the computer shouldn't have been surprise. That said, I find Nattens Madrigal and Bergtatt to be a bit lacking. The latter a better release, but I find Ulver at their best with Shadows of the Sun. They didn't allow themselves to be repetitive.

If you couldn't like their post metal era , try childhood's end album, nice cover songs in there, also Kveldssanger is one of their best albums

Graham Cracker and the Wolfies is perhaps one of my favorite bands of all times. They make the best Christian music. Like other great, such as Veggie Tales, they make themselves accessible. Once you see one wolfy, wolfy not same time. Monday wolfy is fat. Tuesday wolfy is an entertaining man. Wednesday wolfy spider man. Et cetra.
