Like with all things Fincher, the visual style and craftsmanship is top-notch. However, the script is a bit weak. I get that centering the perspective of a detached, amoral, sociopathic character is the point, but that doesn't make him interesting. Some of the voice-over dialogue is truly contrived, even if its purpose is to show the difficulty he has in convincing himself that his worldview is correct. While I like Fassbender as an actor, I'm not convinced he was the ideal choice for the role. The cold, ultra-intensity of the performance only enhances the character being a bit of a bore. The sound design in particular is excellent. The score is solid. The film contains probably the best fight scene of the year. Tilda Swinton is characteristically excellent in her role. It's a pretty good thriller with a bit too much leeway paid to Hollywood clichés. I'd rate it ~7/10.
