Correction to previous post: Toy Matinee wasn't the result of a contest award; Kevin's previous band GIRAFFE was the winner of said contest.

Then again, many newly-signed acts had the same problem. It's an epic shame, because Kevin Gilbert eventually shaped the sound of radio in the 90s (Sheryl Crow, for example), as Patrick Leonard already had with Madonna, but not before Gilbert died. And to my knowledge, Crow did not credit him for getting her foot in the industry door. Mr. Gilbert was a welcome beacon in a dark sea.

It isn't clear if that contract included a budget for promotion. Perhaps Reprise believed that if the winner were so good, the music would magically sell itself. Having acquired the CD in June 1990 (as a promo, since they weren't exactly flying off the shelves), I wondered why it didn't do better. There was a single for Last Plane Out which got sparse air time but no huge marketing effort.

As far as capitalization goes (are we talking creativity or commodity here?), Toy Matinée were signed to Reprise as the award of an open contest in 1990 sponsored by TDK. The contest collected studio demos from musicians and, from the winner, supported their label signing. Kind of an early-American Idol idea of sorts.

Why isn't Toy Matinee capitalized properly? That really bugs me for some reason...
