It's a great happiness that we have Tom Waits and his album "The Heart of Saturday Night" in this world.

This is one of my favorite Tom Waits albums. Big improvement over Closing Time (which itself is quite good) and probably the best of his pre-"bastard son of Beefheart/Howlin' Wolf" albums.

I couldn't get into Waits because of his crazy voice was distracting (I can handle late-Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen), but I think I finally found my entry point.

I echo 'Nearcos' comment below as this was my first Tom Waits album too. Think I was around 15/16 when I'd heard 'What's He Building' from Mule Variations somewhere and found out it was Tom Waits. So I went to the store bought the only album they had in stock, which turned out to be this, and I never looked back. For me, this and Rain Dogs are probably my favourite Waits records as all the songs seems to flow soo well together. I regard tracks such as 'Martha' and 'Ice Cream Man' from Closing Time as better than alot of the Heart album if it were based on an individual basis, but listening through Heart of a Saturday Night beginning to end leaves me much more satisfied. However, Tom is a God among men and all of his albums are genius! *sorry for the wall of text*

What would those of you that consider 'Heart...' to be the best or one of the best, rate as your other couple of favourites? And do you prefer his early period, the Asylum era, to the post-Swordfish or 90's-present material? Don't get me wrong, in itself I love the album, and all the 70's albums, Small Change being my favourite of them, but I've never considered this to be one of his best relatively, though I'm always looking for a different angle on the Waits. I love a lot of the Closing Time balladry, but to be very critical, this album doesn't quite, to me, reach his real potential, as it fills the place of expanding that particular sound to its limit, but without the same level of musical and postmodern development as Small Change. Not that the album playing that role is negative, but we are dealing with one of the greatest songwriters to have walked the earth here. I'm going to close by confirming my love for the album, but do illuminate yours for me, if you would....

It's hard to love anything as much as Rain Dogs, but given this is where I started, I agree with SoMuch and darthlaw.

This album makes me want to get drunk in speakeasies and diddle flappers with small breasts and dewy eyes.
