shocked at all the negative comments here. this album has some of Tom's best ballads he's ever written, and some of his most genuinely thrilling storytelling. love this album, it's one of his best

Pretty good album,. Yes, it's over-long, but each song is interesting to listen to. The big negative for me is - and this has been a problem for many singer-songwriters since the 90s - there's a huge production problem. While some songs are under-produced - "Chocolate Jesus" is comically so - others are over-produced - I'm looking at you, "Big in Japan", "Black Market Baby", "Eyeball Kid" and "Filipino Box Spring Hog" - which makes for a very uneven listening experience, which adds to the over-longness of this album. If the album was produced better, this album would be a much easier, and more enjoyable listen. Still, most of these songs bring a smile to my face, while others are very sad. The depth of feelings on this album is great. Tom Waits really is one of the best singer-songwriters of all-time.

Fantastic album. Cold water, Black market baby, Eyeball kid, Filipino box spring hog, What's he building in there and Come on up to the house - make this album great... and make up for the shocking tracks on this album such as 'Hold on'.

Some good songs here but it's terminally overlong and by this point the whole "Captain Beefheart singing weird poetry over junkyard music" shtick was played out.

This album is uninspired and mostly annoying, I don't really see why people keep ranking it with his best.

I feel that this is the Rain Dogs to Bone Machine's Swordfishtrombones. He took a concept to an entirely different level of awesome.

to be fair the album art is from 1999, so the aesthetic you guys are talking about wasnt a cliche yet

I know this isn't a massively popular opinion, but I honestly think this is his best album, because it balances madness and beauty so expertly - most Tom Waits albums have had moments of both, but heavily come down on one side or the other. This is the only album to balance both against against each other in perfect equilibrium, I reckon.

This is really good. Not quite as good as Rain Dogs, but better than Bone Machine. The ballads, particularly Come on Up to the House and House Where Nobody Lives, are excellent.

@ Tohelle: I said that there's no such thing as a bad waits album...I put the first part in quotes, because I was quoting someone I didn't agree with. I enjoy all of his albums...i honestly can't think of one I don't enjoy at least to some degree.

"This is his best since Swordfishtrombones, honestly." Haha, what? Frank's Wild Years and Bone Machine are masterpieces.

"His worst album since The Black Rider. And it's still bloody amazing XD" Awww...Black Rider is one of my favorite albums...its fucking fantastic. And, for the record, there is no such thing as a bad tom waits album.
