“Gods In Heat” is what could happen if a really clever producer wanted to channel Daft Punk and the Black Keys at the same time. It’s a dark, dramatic psych-pop track, matching a strikingly accessible chanted mantra with gritty whirring pads that remind you this is distinctly experimental territory. Although a thick layer of vinyl crackling creates the familiar feeling of analog warmth, it takes a few listens to notice the almost antsy addition of shifting, scratchy percussion to the high end, or just how murky and deep the melody is, shrouded in effects and synths to become sort of an ever-shifting pool of dark miasma. Like music made to fuel a blues-driven apocalypse, “Gods In Heat” pulls you into a pile of dirt-smeared metal wreckage and funnels you into pulsating tunnel where you’ve got no choice but to enjoy the ride.
