No Highs is his great return to form. I didn't care for the previous couple of albums.

tbh no highs didn't immediately click with me, but seeing him live really helped me understand it. it helped me fully realize it isn't abt crescendos and emotional climaxes, like his previous releases. it's beautifully bleak and nihilistic. after that set, i don't think i could've asked for a better new album

No Highs is good, but I miss his earlier work where he had more drones. His first 6 albums until Ravedeath, 1972 are classic. He leaned into very boreal, droning ambient with those albums that is similar to Biosphere, Thomas Köner, Gas, even Stars of the Lid to an extent. All of those albums feel like a complete unit, flow from song to song with a uniform theme. With Virgins, which to be fair, is a very good album, he started getting more esoteric, abstract, more percussive, and less droney. Songs are staggered, choppy, and with less of a cohesive theme. They're fine albums but less magical than the others IMO. No Highs has some drone, but the more distinct and memorable parts of the album are in the same style he's done for 10 years now.

I agree with you to some extent, No Highs is a "return to form". I wasn't a fan of anything he released post Virgins (which imo is one of his best of his career). I understand completely the need he had of looking for new sounds, he has been doing drone for so long, I bet he felt stale after Virgins.
