“Take My Breath” was teased in the midst of anticipation for The Weeknd’s fifth studio album titled Dawn FM. Reminiscent of retro nostalgia from the late ‘90s combined with elements of psychedelic pop, Abel begins his project’s rollout with a lead single that continues to be faithful to subject matter common in his music, delivering an upbeat anthem about hedonistic concepts like temptation, romance, and passion.
The release of this track was hinted at by The Weeknd via his social media accounts on August 1, 2021. Abel announced on Twitter:
"fuck it … IT STARTS TONIGHT"
Shortly after, he posted a snippet of the track accompanied by visuals. The following day, he posted another snippet announcing the song’s release date and its association with promoting the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
