The Queen Is Dead is the third studio album by English rock band The Smiths . Released onJune 16, 1986in the UK by Rough Trade Records and theJune 23, 1986in the United States by Sire Records , it spent 22 weeks in the UK Albums Chart , peaking at number two. It also reached # 70 on the US Billboard 200 and was certified Gold by the RIAA in the late 1990s.

The title comes from the novel Last Exit to Brooklyn by Hubert Selby, Jr.

The cover photo is a photo of Alain Delon from the film l'Insoumis ( 1964 ).

The album opens with the song Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty from the film La Chambre indiscrète .

The album was produced by Morrissey and Johnny Marr , working primarily with sound engineer Stephen Street , who had engineered the band's 1985 album Meat Is Murder .

In 1996 , the magazine Les Inrockuptibles celebrated the tenth anniversary of the release of this album by publishing a covers album: The Smiths Is Dead , where the titles of the album were covered by British groups of the time.

The album is quoted in Robert Dimery's reference work " 1001 albums that you must have listened to in your life ".
