Maidrin Rua, Irish for The Little Fox, is a traditional Irish song. First published in 1840, the Air has been performed for centuries by Irishmen & women. Unlike the pack-forming gray wolves, red foxes are solitary. Long renowned for their cleverness through depiction in fairy tales and songs, "Vulpes vulpes" is Ireland's only species of fox. Although they may be aesthetically pleasing, foxes kill with a ruthless ferocity which is unrivaled in the Irish animal kingdom. Foxes devastate game birds and other wildlife populations. The song is a great favorite with uilleann pipers.
